A student at the University of North Carolina cashed in on the latest clash between President Obama and White House contender Mitt Romney this month, selling over $14,000 in Big Bird T-shirts around campus.

The T-shirts bear an image of the famous fowl with a caption “Romney just fired my ass” and were created in response to Mitt Romney’s plans to defund the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) made famous in last month’s debate.

“I’m going to stop the subsidy to PBS,” Romney told PBS moderator, Jim Lehrer. “I like PBS, I actually love Big Bird. I like you too, but I’m not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for.”

That comment prompted “Big Bird” to become the most tweeted political moment in Twitter history at over 17,000 tweets per minute.

This gave UNC student Andrew Bauer the idea to sell the Big Bird T-shirts around campus. Bauer told local Chapel Hill, N.C., news station WXII12 he had to act quickly once he realized Big Bird's job was in jeopardy.

With the help of another student, Taylor Robinette, the two put the shirts up for sale at $20, and sold over 700 in a matter of a week. The students say they plan to donate the profits to the Make a Wish Foundation.

Bauer and Robinette also created a shirt that renders Big Bird in the iconic “hope” style made famous by Chicago artist, Shepard Fairey in the lead up to President Obama’s elections in 2008.

Bauer also seized this opportunity to publish the domain FireBigBird.com, where he claims the shirts are “not about politics.”

“It's about Big Bird,” he said.
