Human Sandwichboard: Best Recruitment Technique Ever

By Tony Listi, on April 27, 2012

human sandwichboard

Who needs a table? Tables are nice if you need something to set things on. But that's not necessary to recruit new members. All you really need is a human sandwich board and a clipboard.

What's so great about the human sandwichboard?

  • It's unusual and bold. Most students don't have the courage and boldness to wear a sandwichboard. It's not something students see everyday, so you're going to attract their attention. Getting students' attention and standing out from the crowd are the first key steps in marketing and promoting your student group. People will actually take the time to read what's on your sandwichboard.
  • It bypasses administrative and bureaucratic redtape. Most universities regulate tabling on campus, make you fill out paperwork, and hamper your free speech. Why bother with that? Wear your free speech and video any administrator who demands you remove it!
  • It's mobile. Effective recruitment requires engaging fellow students one-on-one. That means moving around, walking up to students and talking to them. A table and any banner attached to it have to stay put. (You should be walking up to students while tabling too though.) But the human sandwichboard allows you to put a sign right in front of people as they walk by.
  • It instills dedication. This technique is a great way to get supporters to become dedicated members.

Activism tactics: Stand up for free speech

By Justin Pulliam and Morton Blackwell, on April 20, 2012

Free speech is under attack in the United States, and the college campus is no exception.

President Obama recently signed into law H.R. 374, which makes it a felony to protest politicians who are under the protection of the Secret Service.

If this precedent goes unchallenged, politicians will be insulated from protesters and opposition at public events.

Judge Andrew Napolitano explained on the Fox News Channel:

"Secret service agents can decide where there are no free speech zones...  And anyone protected by the Secret Service can ask those agents to ban protests wherever they are.  I can think of three violations:  speech violations, association violations, the right to petition the government for the redress of your grievances.  What good is free speech if the people in the government are so far away from you that they can't hear you?"

Activism Tactics: Hold Liberal Professors Accountable

If your professor encouraged you to burn the Constitution would you do it?  What if he offered you extra credit?

In 2007 a professor at the University of Maine shocked his class when he offered students extra credit to burn the American flag, destroy the Constitution, or get themselves arrested in the name of "free speech."

"There was the loudest silence ever for a second," recalled sophomore Rebekah McDade of Bangor, Maine.

A classmate then asked Associate Professor Paul Grosswiler if he was serious.

"Absolutely," he replied.

McDade reported that Grosswiler had already claimed free speech didn't exist in America anymore because "the Republican administration has made it all but illegal."

Activism Tip: Six Reasons to Run for Student Government

By Justin Pulliam, on April 19, 2012

Spring break is over.  Now just a few more weeks to coast down until summer break.  Right?  Not so fast...  The odds are that student government elections are right around the corner at your college or university, and running for student government is your chance to build your résumé, gain campaign experience, and advance conservative causes on your campus.

Here are six reasons why you should run for a Student Government Association (SGA) position:

1.      Win your first elected office.  Everyone has to start somewhere.  Many congressmen, governors, and other elected officials got their start in college as student government representatives.  The campaign techniques you use for your student government race apply to campaigns for larger public offices as well.  After you win your student government election in college, the winning streak will boost you to victory later in life.
