By Jason Thomas, on October 04, 2011

No Freedom of Religion at Vanderbilt

By Jason Thomas, on September 27, 2011

Our friends over at Phi Beta Cons blog highlight an op-ed from Carol Swain, author of a new book called 'Be the People: A Call to Reclaim America's Faith and Promise, and a professor of law and political science at Vanderbilt.

Professor Swain takes the university to task for attacking religious freedom in the name of political correctness.  She writes:

Vanderbilt Prevents “Free Speech” on Online Blog

By Lance Wheeler, on July 05, 2011

Administrators are censoring speech at Vanderbilt University.

Vanderbilt implemented a new feature called "Free Speech Zone" on Common Place, a forum designed for first year students to network and interact. The forum is intended to free space for students to post information about events happening at Vanderbilt.  Despite this, it has some unusual rules attached.

Students are not allowed to post advertisements, organized crime, or hate speech.  Restricting hate speech is against an individual's free speech granted from the first amendment.

Kenny Tan, a student at Vanderbilt and intern at FIRE, wrote an opinion article on the recent decision of the university.  He states his concern with the decision,

Yet, by misleading students to think that free speech does not protect "hate speech," Vanderbilt is doing its students a disservice. Those who read this prohibition on "hate speech" are likely to believe that they will face disciplinary action if they air beliefs others might find offensive, creating a harmful chilling effect on campus speech.

Student Government Candidate Stands for Freedom

By Amanda Prevette, on February 18, 2011

When Kenny Tan came to Vanderbilt University, he was excited to join a community that, "prides itself on providing students and faculty with an academic environment of free expression."  Now, Tan is finding out that the promise of academic free expression is all but non-existant for Vanderbilt students.

But, Tan didn't accept the situation as unchangeable and give up; rather, he showed true leadership and began to challenge the administration's diregard for the first amendment on campus.

Protest Vagina Monologues

By Amanda Prevette, on February 04, 2011

It's that time of year again...The Vagina Monologues are, regretably, coming to a campus near you.

Not only does The Vagina Monologues, an episodic play by Eve Ensler, unapologetically promote an anti-male and anti-heterosexual worldview and portrays women as perpetual victims, it is also often funded by YOUR student activity fees.

Vanderbilt Abortion Clause

By Amanda Prevette, on January 19, 2011

Controversy shook Vanderbilt University when it was made public that the nurse residency application for the Vanderbilt nursing program requires the abortion pledge AND encouraged nursing candidates to pursue other vocational goals if they refuse to participate in abortions.

The nurse residency application states:

"If you are chosen for the Nurse Residency Program in the Women's Health track, you will be expected to care for women undergoing termination of pregnancy. Procedures performed in the Labor and Delivery unit include...terminations of pregnancy. If you feel you cannot provide care to women during this type of event, we encourage you to apply to a different track of the Nurse Residency Program to explore opportunities that may best fit your skills and career goals."

ROTC Provides Important Leadership Skills

By Amanda Prevette, on January 19, 2011

With little faith in many of America's institutions, the American people still have an overwhelming trust in our military.   Many of the students involved with CRO supported conservative/libertarian groups are, or have been, involved with ROTC and recognize the importance of a strong national defense.  In order for the reverence of our military to continue, it is important to focus on the leaders
