Do Young Voters Support Obamacare?
According to the media, there's a general belief that young voters overwhelmingly support Obamacare. How accurate is that stereotype?
DickMorris.com and The League of American Voters report that a Zogby poll conducted with likely voters in Arkansas, Maine and North Dakota found other results:
Age / Support & Oppose Obama Plan
Under 30 = 25 Support & 65 Oppose
30-49 = 28 Support & 60 Oppose
50-64 = 41 Support & 50 Oppose
Over 65 = 32 Support & 55 Oppose
Given that young people would shoulder the burden of paying for a government-run health care, it's hardly surprising that opposition would grow as more details are released. Since young people frequently opt out of paying for insurance or purchase catastrophe plans when available, Obamacare would require young voters to purchase expensive plans or risk paying fines or jail time. According to an Associated Press article:
Insurance industry experts say it's important to bring young people like Mohring into the system because they're healthy and don't need costly medical care. Their premiums would help subsidize older, less healthy people in the insurance pool, thereby bringing down average costs.
That's one of the reasons why the health care bills circulating in Congress would require most Americans to get health insurance, or face a fine.
Earlier this month, we reported findings from the Cato Institute that under Obamacare, health care premiums for young voters would double. The Zogby poll indicates that young voters are listening. Between rampant unemployment rates and expected costs related to health care expansion, voters under the age of 30 will feel Obamacare in their wallets significantly more than older generations.
