Exposing Bias in Freshman Reading Programs
Before freshmen even step foot on campus, university administrators are pushing their liberal agenda. Their weapon of choice is summer reading programs, which require incoming students to read a book assigned by the college.
The theory is that students will analyze a book to get ready for college coursework. The reality is much different as schools overwhelmingly mandate books that don't promote discussion and critical thinking -- just far-left politics.
The numbers prove it too. This summer, the National Association of Scholars (NAS) published a study that found 70% of books assigned to incoming freshmen promote "liberal causes and liberal sensibilities." Just 1% promote conservative principles. The results were based on an examination of 290 college reading programs in summers 2009 and 2010.
Consider just some of the selections:
- Thomas Friedman's Hot, Flat, and Crowded, which insists the US needs to embrace government-sponsored "green technology" and a clean energy agenda to "save" us all from global warming. Schools that recently assigned this book include The George Washington University, Northwestern University, and James Madison University (VA).
- Moshin Hamid'sThe Reluctant Fundamentalist, which features a young Pakistani immigrant who finds his sympathies lie with the 9/11 terrorist hijackers. This book was required at Washington University in St. Louis.
- Most outrageous is Barack Obama's Dreams from My Father, which relates the president's life story. It's been assigned at Albion College (MI), Augustana College (IL), Ithaca College (NY), and the University of Washington.
It's not hard to find worthwhile books that discuss conservative principles to assign to incoming freshmen. Look at these recent bestsellers:
- The Road to Serfdom, a classic book first published in 1945 by Nobel Prize winner Friedrich Hayek, demonstrates how the erosion of freedom and individualism ultimately leads to fascism. It endures as one of the most influential books on politics and economics.
- Liberty and Tyranny: A Conservative Manifesto by Mark Levin analyzes the most pressing political issues facing the United States. This exciting book led the New York Times' book list for three months.
It's time for campus reformers to hold their administrators accountable for this inexcusable bias. Students pay tuition for a balanced education, not for indoctrination. If your school is pushing liberal literature then you and your campus group should petition the administration for conservative books as well.
When conservatives expose this outrageous imbalance, the public responds. The National Association of Scholars' study was covered in national media outlets, from FoxNews.com to the Huffington Post. Imagine the public embarrassment liberal administrators and faculty would face if you highlighted a biased book -- or entire reading program-- at your school.
