Sustainapedia: An Encylopedia of Sustainability in Higher Education

By Abigail Alger, on October 9, 2009

The National Association of Scholars, which -- by way of disclosure -- reviewed CampusReform.org favorably, offers up an encyclopedia of sustainability in higher education.

Sustainability, for the uninitiated to the Global Church of Green, is the code word for environmentalism. "Environmentalism" is now properly perceived as political; "sustainability" has curiously escaped that association thus far.

The encyclopedia tracks the people, groups, and terms in the growing movement to "green" campuses in administrative efforts and coursework. It's a useful resource for students and parents.

I must admit, though, that my favorite section is the new vocabulary, listed in the back.

Sustainabullies: People who use coercion, peer pressure, or intimidation to persaude others to alter their behavior in favor of sustainability.

Sustainatopians: Sustainability advocates who want to create utopia on earth, no matter the cost to mankind.

If you've been on a college campus, you've seen and heard both. But in the spirit of learning, enjoy a vocabulary exercise, and cautionary true tale.

My ethics professor was such a sustainatopian that he claimed we would have to surrender to "mutually agreed upon coercion" to survive impending climate doom. When I challenged him (respectfully, I might add), he became a sustainabully and, abandoning all professional standards, led  the 100-person class against me -- which he apologized for later in the day via email.

It is nice to know the buzz words so we can deprogram our children when they come home from school! The Encyclopedia of Sustainability is full of them. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.
