Take Your Tweets to the Streets
With Facebook, iPhone Applications, and Twitter leading the social network scene, it seems like a breeze to find likeminded people online in your community and collectively come together for a positive cause. Unfortunately, between the Twitter updates and Facebook Notifications, college students can rarely find the time to squeeze in a two-page paper, let alone actually use their free time to do something productive.
It then comes as no surprise that a large number of students in our generation report symptoms of an attention deficit disorder. Whether this disorder is a verifiable ailment or not, these reports are indeed an indication of an underlying sense of commotion in many student's lives. It could be that the social networking phenomenon is as much of a blessing as it is a curse for many young conservatives.
While many older, conservative leaders are getting "in" with the times, quoting themselves via "tweets", this era's latest and greatest developments seem to be distracting many of our country's future conservative leaders. Although many young conservatives use features on these social networking sites to talk up a big game, so much time is spent doing just that, talking, as opposed to actually doing. In this respect, it is ironic that many older conservatives are striving to learn how to use these online tools to connect with their younger base, while our country's conservative youth needs to step away from their laptops and PDA's in order to focus on taking action.
The dangers of these two ends of the spectrum coming together are undeniably disastrous as we know all too well what can happen when mixing a broad, slow-moving, online audience and political talking points together. Case in point, the 2008 presidential election and the nomination of Barack Obama. If many of you reading this are political junkies like I am and were constantly updating your Facebook status about each turning point of the McCain vs. Obama presidential race, you too were likely attacked by the bandwagon Obama cohorts who argued against you while linking to FightTheSmears.com and FactCheck, org, both supported by the Obama campaign. Well, a trillion dollar deficit later and a White House full of "czars," all we can do is laugh at their utopian belief in supporting hope and change, all too easily from their desktop computer.
It's about time we take on the liberals and beat them at their own game. We need to stop discussing our political philosophies and get active. While we don't need to argue with others, and get in their faces, which Obama told supporters would be a good way to get their point across, we do need to fight tactfully against the liberal lies that are brainwashing our generation. It's time to take our "tweets" to the streets.
