Reformer's Blog
Why take action? Because a good protest can catch the whole nation's eye.
...and not only a good protest, but any really effective event you hold on campus. Your campus event can change the political discourse of the whole country.
Does this sound unrealistic? It's not. Think about the most famous protests in American history.
Consider the Boston Tea Party, on which 2009's tea party protests have been based. Less than 150 men were involved in dumping tea into the Boston Bay -- probably a small event by most of our standards...but it hardly went unnoticed.
Or think about the modern tea parties themselves: They certainly started small, but no one can reasonably ignore the tea party movement now.
Similarly, antiwar protests on college campuses are inextricably linked with any comprehensive discussion of the Vietnam War, as are Martin Luther King Jr.'s demonstrations with the 1960s civil rights movement.
More recently (and connected directly to Campus Reform), the Young Americans for Liberty group at Iowa State University hosted Congressman Ron Paul on campus and gathered national news attention. So did the YAL group which built a mock gulag on their campus to commemorate the fall of communism.
Your group can do the same. Garnering national media attention is a great way to raise awareness about your group, increase membership, and even attract donors. You can also change the national discussion of the issue at hand.
Pick an activism idea now. You'll probably schedule your event for next semester, but a truly effective protest or speaker program may take months of planning, like it did when Wake Forest hosted Ron Paul -- and attracted a crowd of 1,300 at a school of about 4,400 undergraduates!
Then, study Campus Reform's publicity resources to make sure you have all your bases covered on your way to attracting national media attention. Think big -- you'll be surprised what you can accomplish -- but always under-promise and over-deliver.
Share this post and the activism idea you select with the other members of your campus group. Direct them to the publicity resources as well so they too can be active and prepared.
And, as always, never hesitate to contact CampusReform.org's Campus Service Coordinator for your region to ask for absolutely free and thoroughly helpful assistance with any question you may have!
