Why take action? Because YOU can expose abuses of intellectual liberty on campus.

By Bonnie Kristian, on December 28, 2009

Don't be censored on campus. Stand up for intellectual liberty. Most colleges and universities are not what they pretend to be.

They are not places for inquiring minds to learn in an open market of ideas.  In fact, many house faculties which systematically attack and often exclude ideas and people in favor of true academic freedom -- especially freedom to give fair consideration to conservative and libertarian philosophy.

No wonder the college experience turns so many students to the left.

The first step you can take to stop abuses of intellectual liberty is to expose any abuses or bias you discover.  CampusReform.org makes it simple and fun to do this.

Most readers of this blog are probably on winter break right now, but that doesn't mean you can't begin to prepare for a spring semester of effective activism.  Consider these three of Campus Reform's many activism ideas as a great way to start exposing abuse at your school:

  1. Combat Leftist Abuses and Bias on Campus

  2. Research and Publicize the Political Contribution Pattern of Your School’s Faculty and Staff

  3. Speaker Watch

Which idea you choose will depend on your school's intellectual climate, as well as factors like these:

  • How serious is the repression of academic freedom?
  • Does the main problem stem from faculty bias, unfairness in the administration, or perhaps aggressive left-wing student groups which are given special treatment?
  • How large is your school?  How large is your conservative or libertarian group?  In other words, what is your capactity for spreading information on campus?
  • Do you have access to off-campus resources and assistance?  Can you get access?

Want academic balance on campus? Take action! If you find yourself dealing with serious attacks on your intellectual liberty, you may wish to contact a legal defense organization for assistance.  Check out Campus Reform's extensive list of legal organizations which will be happy to assist you -- especially the Alliance Defense Fund and FIRE.

So spread this idea among the other members of your group and set a date for a planning meeting to get a head start on your spring activism schedule.  Read over Campus Reform's helpful piece on fighting academic abuse on your campus, appropriately titled, "Fight Back."

Then pick an activism idea and get to work!  There's never any time to waste when you're bringing intellectual balance to your school.
