Anti-Speech Rules on the Rise at California Community Colleges

By Adam Weinberg, on May 20, 2010

Several California community colleges are moving away from free speech on campus, opting instead for so-called "free speech zones" and regulations which limit the rights of protesters. Apparently, the burden of speech here, there, and anywhere is too much for their administrations to handle.

If that sounds like a lead line from The Onion, think again. Free speech is under attack on campuses across the nation, and one reason the issue remains underreported is often because conservative and religious speakers are the subjects of limits on expression.

At the College of Alameda in the East San Francisco Bay area, the administration introduced a proposal for a free speech zone after some students and faculty reported feeling "harassed" by pro-life demonstrators who displayed images of aborted babies.
