It was an honor when Paul Loeb, a nationally recognized author and a force in civic engagement, engaged with one of my students in the civic-engagement class I teach at Florida Gulf Coast University. It is also an honor when he takes the time to engage in e-mail exchanges both with the student and me, the director of the civic-engagement program at the university, and a reporter from the Naples Daily News.
Loeb is felt by many to be one of the most eloquent defenders of liberal activism in the nation. His book has been a joy from which to teach one of the three hours my class meets each week. It’s drawn students into dialogue and conversation on many fronts, despite the fact that it is more than 10 years old (and fortunately is in the process of being rewritten and republished).
