Any conservative or libertarian group can conduct an event to spread awareness for this new website for right-of-center college students. IntellectualTakeout.org aims to arm college students with the intellectual firepower to discuss and debate academic subject matter in real time. The site provides an online library of sources that defend individual rights, limited government, and the free market. An increasingly technological classroom allows a student who attends class with a laptop to access Intellectual Takeout’s database while their professor preaches leftist dogma. The student can then email the information found at the site to some or all of their classmates, effectively providing an alternative viewpoint in minutes. Events to promote the site can be held at any point during the semester, but they are more effective at the beginning of each semester. Then you can fully acquaint incoming students with the site as they begin classes. That site is currently in its beta stage, so while promoting the website you should promote independent student research. Teaching students how to find arguments that counter leftist professors should be the priority. HOW TO TAKE ACTION 1. Collect the materials needed for the event. The materials required should be minimal. Informational flyers should be made with the website address printed clearly. For greater visibility a table can be acquired at a visible location on campus to distribute the flyers more easily.
2. Reserve space on campus for the event. If you choose to run a table, contact the Student Activities Office and attempt to reserve the most high-traffic area available. If you are denied a site on campus, hold the event in a nearby public location which students often frequent.
3. Post informational flyers around campus. Find visible and regularly frequented locations on campus, and post dozens of copies of your flyers. Printing them in unique colors can help distinguish them from the flyers posted by other organizations.
4. Hand out fliers near classrooms. One way to introduce students on your campus to Intellectual Takeout is to hand out informational flyers outside of academic buildings and classrooms. As students enter their classes with their laptops they will be tempted to visit the site and explore its many options.
5. Create a schedule. To be sure that every student is exposed to the website, a schedule should be set assigning specific people to hand out flyers at specific campus locations and times. Attention should be paid first and foremost to large academic buildings that are the most frequented by students, especially freshman.
6. Prepare for opposition. Keep a video camera available whenever you can (this may be difficult for such a decentralized event), and record any aggression -– both verbal and physical. If some behaves belligerently, ask why he or she objects to your exercise of your right to free speech. For more information on how to deal with opposition on campus, reference "Fight Back." |
