March Liberal Madness
This event is fun and a humorous way for general conservative groups and libertarian groups to illuminate “liberal madness.” Play off of college basketball’s “March Madness” with this basketball-themed event designed to highlight liberal madness. Create a bracket which pits leftist figures against each other. Be sure to find as many absurd quotes as possible. Each day, set up a table, signs, and posters explaining each viewpoint. Encourage students to vote at your table or at an online polling site. Repeat the process until you have a champion! You can also hold this event and use college professors at your school instead of famous leftists. The key to this angle will be to have professor quotes that are absurd and biased to demonstrate to your fellow students the far left’s stranglehold on intellectual discourse. This event is obviously most effective during college basketball’s March Madness tournament. A description of this event may also be found in Young America's Foundation's "Campus Conservative Battle Plan." HOW TO TAKE ACTION 1. Collect the materials needed for the event. You will need to acquire pictures of the famous leftists or local professors you are featuring, poster board and other materials for signs, a table, informational flyers, a ballot box, paper, pencils and ballots. Also research must be done to find quotes for the famous leftists or professors to put on the bracket. If you can obtain a basketball hoop or basketballs, you could draw students in with games and prizes. 2. Reserve space on campus for the event. Contact the Student Activities Office and attempt to reserve the most high-traffic area available. Have an indoor backup location just in case it rains. 3. Invite allied organizations. Ask other conservative organizations on campus or in the outside community to contribute to the purchase of supplies or help distribute information at your table. This is a great way to strengthen cooperation between different groups in the conservative movement, and to increase attendance and volunteers in the form of members of the other groups. 4. Advertise! Success depends on how well you publicize your event, so you should advertise early and often. This doesn’t necessarily mean paid advertising; “earned media” may work even better for you. Keep a video camera available at all times, and record any aggression -– both verbal and physical. If some behaves belligerently, ask why he or she objects to your exercise of your right to free speech. For more information on how to deal with opposition on campus, reference "Fight Back." 6. Create a schedule. Have members of your group volunteer as much time as possible to man your informational table and interact with passersby. 7. Let the Madness begin! Man your table during the time you have allotted for the event. Make sure group members maintain enthusiasm and engage passersby. Wear t-shirts for your college team, especially if your team is in the tournament. This will endear your event to the student body in general. 8. Advertise! (again) The fact that your event is over does not mean that your public relations work is done. Earned media can be extremely useful to you.
