Take Action
Mock Shooting Range
This is a fun event for Second Amendment groups, general conservative groups, or libertarian groups to raise awareness about gun rights and the Second Amendment. Your group members will encourage students passing by to shoot a pyramid of cans with a Nerf gun. Prizes are then given out in the form of water guns and/or Second Amendment material. Other group members pass out free Second Amendment literature to passersby. This event can be held any time, but water guns will be more appealing prizes if the weather is warm. You might also want to schedule your mock shooting range to coincide with major Second Amendment news. For example, if the Supreme Court or the high court of your state were to hand down a decision on gun rights, your raffle would be appropriate because Second Amendment rights would already be a topic of campus conversation. HOW TO TAKE ACTION 1. Collect the materials needed for the event. You should acquire a Nerf gun which is very obviously a toy, soda cans (not beer cans) to build the pyramid (full, empty, or a combination of both depending on how difficult you wish the game to be), water guns, informational flyers, poster boards and other supplies for signs, and a table. 2. Reserve space on campus for the event. Contact the Student Activities Office and attempt to reserve the most high-traffic area available. 3. Invite allied organizations. Ask other pro-gun rights organizations on campus or in the outside community to contribute to the purchase of supplies or set up an informational booth by your table. This is a great way to strengthen cooperation between different groups in the gun rights movement, and to increase attendance and volunteers in the form of members of the other groups. 4. Advertise! Success depends on how well you publicize your event, so you should advertise early and often. This doesn’t necessarily mean paid advertising; “earned media” may work even better for you. Keep a video camera available at all times, and record any aggression – both verbal and physical. If some behaves belligerently, ask why he or she objects to your exercise of your right to free speech. For more information on how to deal with opposition on campus, reference "Fight Back." 6. Create a schedule. Have members of your group volunteer as much time as possible to man your informational table and host the pyramid shooting game. 7. Build your can pyramid. Begin to set up your event at least half an hour before it is scheduled to begin. Do not make the pyramid too big or it will take too long to set up again once knocked down. You also may want to consider having two pyramids at once; this will allow you to keep one running while you reassemble the other. If you use a lot of empty cans, the pyramid will have to be reassembled more often, but you will give out more literature as prizes. If you use any full cans at all, make sure that no one is hit if/when the pyramid falls. 8. Set up your table. Have another table with Second Amendment literature and prizes. You should also include a signup sheet for people interested in joining your group. Next, erect signs displaying Second Amendment slogans and encouraging students to take a shot to win a prize. 9. Ready, Aim, Fire! Once you are ready to begin, have members pass out literature to passing students and encourage them to take a shot at the cans. Let them take multiple shots. It should not be too difficult to win – after all, you want as many prize winners as you can afford. Once participants succeed in knocking over the pyramid, give them their prize of a water gun, NRA hat, Second Amendment stickers, pamphlets, etc. Keep the event lively. If no students are firing at a moment, have a group member take a shot to keep up the spectacle and draw attention to your table. 10. Advertise! (again) The fact that your event is over does not mean that your public relations work is done. Earned media can be extremely useful to you.
