Take Action
Second Amendment Defense Education Week
After years of violent attacks at high schools and colleges across the country, it’s no surprise that many conservative and libertarian students are now more interested than ever in concealed carrying on campus to defend themselves and their classmates. You can take action to promote this important aspect of our constitutional rights! Students for Concealed Carry on Campus (SCCC) has introduced a new activism idea for college students interested in supporting the Second Amendment: a week of activism to raise awareness about carrying on campus. Click on the link below to download SCCC’s thorough guide to implementing the week-long educational project at your school. You might also consider incorporating these other Second Amendment-related activism ideas from CampusReform.org: “Mock Shooting Range,” “Empty Holster Protest,” or “Gun Raffle.” HOW TO TAKE ACTION 1. Download the guide provided by SCCC. This resource will give you step by step instructions for projects to keep you busy throughout your week of Second Amendment activism. Pick from the guide and Campus Reform which specific ideas you’ll use. 2. Collect the materials needed for the event. These will vary depending on what ideas you select. At the very least, you will likely need informational flyers, poster boards and other supplies for signs, and a table. 3. Reserve space on campus for the event. Contact the Student Activities Office and attempt to reserve the most high-traffic area available. 4. Invite allied organizations. Ask other pro-gun rights organizations on campus or in the outside community to contribute to the purchase of supplies or set up an informational booth by your table. This is a great way to strengthen cooperation between different groups in the gun rights movement, and to increase attendance and volunteers in the form of members of the other groups. 5. Advertise! Success depends on how well you publicize your event, so you should advertise early and often. This doesn’t necessarily mean paid advertising; “earned media” may work even better for you. Click here to learn several important publicity measures to use before, during, and after the event. 6. Prepare for opposition. Keep a video camera available at all times, and record any aggression – both verbal and physical. If some behaves belligerently, ask why he or she objects to your exercise of your right to free speech. For more information on how to deal with opposition on campus, reference "Fight Back." 7. Create a schedule. Make sure that your event(s) are appropriately staffed at all times. Ask your group members to maintain enthusiasm throughout their participation in Second Amendment Awareness week. 8. Raise awareness on campus about gun rights and their benefits. Follow the instructions for the activism ideas you select and stand up for your Second Amendment rights on campus. Contact Campus Reform or SCCC for any assistance you may need. 9. Advertise! (again) The fact that your event is over does not mean that your public relations work is done. Earned media can be extremely useful to you.
