Take Action

Katie Couric at Case Western Reserve University

CouricSo Katie Couric is coming to your school to speak at graduation.  So what?  She's just a news anchor and journalist, right?

Wrong.  Couric has a well-established tendency to support left-leaning policies and politicians and to attack conservatives and Christians.  Here are a couple of key quotes and exchanges [all emphasis mine]:

  • Speaking with Kay Bailey Hutchison, Couric implied that a political party which is not pro-choice cannot be considered inclusive

"You know a lot has been made of the Republican Party being a very inclusive party, one that can embrace the views of various people. Given the way the platform has worked out vis a vis abortion, and the fact that some of these Republican governors are not speaking because they felt, as if they were being censored. Do you still believe you can call the Republican Party an inclusive party?"
  • In an exhange with Whoopi Goldberg, Couric attempts to conceal her anti-life activism:

Couric: "So you write about choice meaning what?"

Goldberg: "Well because, you know, when you get out there and you march, because we've marched together."

Couric, feigning ignorance, retorted: "Nooo. I'm not allowed to do that." [She giggles]

Goldberg, playing along, with tongue firmly implanted in cheek as she stared upward: "Oh, no that's right. We have not marched together. It was somebody that looked like you."

  • Discussing the tragic murder of Matthew Shephard, Couric tried to blame conservative Christianity for brutal anti-gay violence:

"Let’s talk a little bit more about the right wing because I know that’s something you feel very strongly about. But this is actually not necessarily about the right wing, but perhaps a climate that some say has been established by religious zealots or Christian conservatives. There have been two recent incidents in the news I think that upset most people in this country, that is the dragging death of James Byrd Junior and the beating death of Matthew Shepard."

You can find more -- much more -- evidence of Couric's bias in two helpful reports from the Media Research Center, which is the source of these quotes:  "Katie Couric's Years of Liberal Tilt" and the MRC profile on Couric, which categorizes her more damning statements by topic.

But in the meantime, Couric is scheduled to appear on your campus.  Fortunately, whether you're already in an active conservative or libertarian group or simply a solitary student who wants to take action, Campus Reform has an activism suggestion for you!

If you're acting on your own, your time will probably be best spent on a flyer blitzThis simple activism idea is a great way to spread your message of the truth about Katie Couric's not-so-objective reporting.

Using the quotes on this page or others which you find particularly galling, create a flyer to inform the attendees of your commencement of the truth about Katie Couric.  Graduation ceremonies are long events, and you can bet your flyers will be read...twice.

In addition to the mass posting of flyers as in a traditional flyer blitz, you'll also want to get your flyers directly into the hands of the event attendees -- particularly parents and other, older family members of the graduating seniors.  Many of these people will tend to be more conservative than their students and may also be donors or alumni of your school.

Download the flyer template at the bottom of this page and modify it to suit your purposes.  Use the information and image on the page, or do your own research!  print the two pages out back to back on one sheet of paper.

Print out as many flyers as you'll be able to transport and distribute and find a location where you can hand the flyers out to the graduation audience as they find their seats.  Once they sit down and begin reading, your mission is accomplished!

You may not see immediate results from your activism, but you can bet that the drop in donations to the school which may result from your activism could prompt the administration to consider a little more carefully the next time they select a commencement speaker.

if you're a member of a group on campus, you can add another componant to your activism.  In addition to the flyer blitz, you can stage a protest of Couric and your school's choice of a commencement speaker so hostile to freedom.

Follow the instructions from Campus Reform's Speaker Watch activism idea to implement this plan.
