College administrators keep signs that falsely claim concealed firearms are illegal on campus

Administrators at a college in Colorado say they will not take down misleading signs that falsely claim carrying concealed firearms is illegal.

The signs directly contradict a recent state Supreme Court decision granting students the right to carry concealed weapons on all of Colorado’s public campuses.

These signs that falsely claim carrying concealed firearms is illegal, are posted all over the Red Rocks Community College campus.

The “possession of firearms is prohibited on the Red Rocks Community College campus except for peace officers or those who have permission from the RRCC Chief of Police,” say the signs.

Students are now legally allowed to carry concealed firearms on Colorado campuses following a state Supreme Court decision earlier this year which overturned a long standing campus ban and ruled that the same laws permitting concealed carry off campus also applied on campus.

Of the signs, Red Rocks Community College Police Chief Bob Kraus admitted to Campus Reform that they “can be misleading,” but doubled down saying he has no plans to take them down.

“It’s a sign buddy. That’s all it is. It’s a sign,” he added.

However, Students for Concealed Carry, a national student-run organization which advocates for legal concealed carry on college campuses, has a different view.

“It’s shocking that they would choose to ignore the Colorado Supreme Court’s ruling,” said SCC spokesman David Burnett. “But unelected college administrators frequently look for ways to circumvent the law and usurp authority belonging only to legislators.”

Still, the police chief said he will not take down the signs and found it “perplexing” as to why they mattered.

“It’s a sign. That’s all it is,” said Kraus. “We have not done anything wrong. I don’t know what the issue is.”
