Following Obama's lead, school increases minimum wage

Centenary College has raised the minimum wage for both its full-time and part-time staff to $10.10 following President Obama’s State of the Union address.

The college’s president, David Rowe, made the announcement Wednesday according to the Associated Press. He also asked Sodexo and National Resource Management, the school’s two major vendors, to do the same; both have agreed.

Centenary is a private arts and sciences college affiliated with the United Methodist Church. The Shreveport, Louisiana school’s enrollment was 661 students in the 2013-2014 academic year according to its official website.

President Obama said Tuesday that he would raise the minimum wage for workers covered by new federal contracts from $7.25 to $10.10 via executive order. The minimum wage in Louisiana remains at $7.25 per hour.
