UNM researcher caught celebrating deliveries of aborted fetuses

Evidence referred to the state’s Attorney General by Congress suggests that the University of New Mexico may have illegally procured aborted body parts for research.

The Albuquerque Journal reports that a UNM lab technician’s notebook, collected in a large body of evidence subpoenaed by the U.S. House Select Panel on Infant Lives and forwarded to the New Mexico Attorney General’s office, contains several celebratory expressions, including the phrase “whoo hoo!!” in celebration of the school clinic’s acquisition of an “entire pancreas” from an aborted fetus.

Another entry shows that the technician drew a frowning face after another fetal pancreas was not delivered intact, presumably hindering her research efforts.

A subsequent note indicates than an abortion facility may have provided an aborted baby’s brain to a youth summer camp in New Mexico, Live Action News reports.

“Asked clinic for digoxin treated tissue 24-28 wks. for methylation study & because [redacted] wants whole, fixed brains to dissect w/ summer camp students,” the entry reads, followed by descriptions of triplets, twins, and babies well past the point of viability, along with the recorded weights of their brains.

Notably, UNM’s Health Science Center released a statement clarifying that it offers a “Dream Makers Health Careers Program” that “provides middle and high school students with unique opportunities to gain exposure to the many possibilities in the health professions while enhancing their science and math skills,” specifically mentioning the “dissection of various specimens.”

The U.S. Congress referred the case to New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas in June, recommending further investigation into whether or not UNM violated a federal statute that makes it a 10-year felony to accept, solicit, or purchase aborted body parts for research purposes.

“Section 289g-2 requires safeguards be in place, including a concern that too close a relationship might be formed between an abortion clinic and researchers,” Rep. Marsha Blackburn, Chair of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, writes in the congressional referral. “Through its investigation, the Panel has discovered that personnel within UNM’s hospital and medical school have aggressively engaged in expanding abortion in New Mexico through the offices, personnel, and resources of UNM.”

Lila Rose, president and founder of Live Action, condemned the “gruesome discovery” as further evidence of the “barbaric nature of the abortion industry and the total disrespect for basic human rights that its allies share.”

“This unimaginable inhumane activity—as well as Southwestern Women’s Options and the University of New Mexico, which facilitated it—must be unanimously condemned,” she declared, asserting that “the piecemealing and experimentation on their corpses adds insult to the already grave human rights injury of abortion.”

UPDATE: Abby Johnson, a former clinic director for Planned Parenthood who became a pro-life activist after becoming horrified by her firsthand experience with abortion, told Campus Reform that the lab technician's gleeful reactions to the delivery of aborted human remains are regrettably common within such fields.

"I can very much relate to this woman's experience, unfortunately. I remember delighting in my job as a POC technician as I sorted through the body parts of aborted children," she admitted ruefully. "That's what happens when you are immersed in a culture of death and evil on a daily basis.

"But I have also experienced that veil being torn away in [an] instant," she added, pointing out optimistically that "no matter how far down that path we go, there is always redemption available."
