Every Valentine's Day, colleges and universities across the country share the gospel of radical feminism.  Some offer seminars attacking America's "patriarchal" society.  Others pass out "flowers" made of condoms in order to promote "safe", casual sex.  Many schools host a performance of The Vagina Monologues, a feminist (and sometimes offensive) play by Eve Ensler.

For many, The Vagina Monologues is an over-the-top theatrical glorification of the hook-up culture, feminine "liberation" and physical satisfaction.  "The play... distorts human sexuality by placing sinful activity in a favorable light," said a statement by the Cardinal Newman Society (CNS), a Catholic advocacy organization. 

Christians often see the play as a direct attack on their faith.  In one scene, Ensler mocks Christian salvation by portraying the lesbian rape of a teenage girl as her "salvation" from the bonds of heterosexuality.  The play even refers to the girl's experience as, "a kind of Heaven."

Despite the derogatory nature and anti-Christian animus of The Vagina Monologues, Catholic colleges and universities continue to host the play on their campuses.  Last week, the following Catholic institutions allowed the play to be performed:

• Bellarmine University
• Boston College
• College of the Holy Cross
• College of Saint Rose
• DePaul University
• Dominican University of California
• Fordham University
• Georgetown University
• Seattle University

Proponents of the play argue that it advocates for an end to violence against women and is used as a fundraiser for women's centers.  However, CNS states that, "whatever good intentions the performers may have are undermined by the play's obscene and demeaning content."

Catholic institutions of higher education have taken steps in the right direction in regard to The Vagina Monologues.  in 2003, at its all-time high, a total of 32 Catholic colleges hosted the play.  Now, only 9 schools continue to defy the wishes of the Church and the traditions of their faith by presenting the theatrical work on campus.

CNS President Patrick J. Reilly said: "The few remaining Catholic colleges who host this vile play ought to look around to the rest of Catholic higher education.  Most Catholic colleges are finding that social issues can be addressed seriously, morally and with genuine respect for women."
