Chick-fil-A, the popular fast food restaurant chain, is a symbol of "hate," a professor at Eastern Illinois University (EIU) told Campus Reform on Monday.
A professor at a university recently said Chick-fil-A is a symbol of "hate."
Lisa Moyer, who teaches in the Family Studies Department at EIU, made the comment in response to questions about a faculty resolution that proposes ejecting a Chick-fil-A restaurant from campus for the franchise's alleged opposition to homosexuals.
“We have this symbol on campus in the Union representing, essentially, hate and that made a lot of students, particularly in the LGBT community, feel uncomfortable,” explained Moyer in a conversation with Campus Reform.
Although the Faculty Senate resolution to remove Chick-fil-A from campus was defeated 3-6, Moyer said the ensuing discussion resulted in a school opening an office for LGBTQ outreach.
“Our Pride (EIU’s LGBT Outreach organization) group recently was told they could have some permanent office space on campus and I believe...it was a direct result,” Moyer stated.
Chick-fil-A came under fire last summer after the franchise’s CEO, Dan Cathy, indicated personal opposition to marriage. Several LGBTQ groups expressed outrage over Cathy's personal donations to pro-family conservative groups such as the Family Research Council and attempted to organize a boycott of the chain.
Student government associations at several schools including Elon, Emory, and Southern Illinois University-Evansville have all recently passed resolutions condemning Chick-fil-A’s presence at their schools.
