UMich to hire 'Anti-Racism By Design' faculty member

The listing is part of the University of Michigan's 'Racial Justice & Technology' initiative, a cluster hire of 20 positions over a three-year period.

The University of Michigan is offering a tenured position for an “Anti-Racism By Design” professor. 

The job posting states that qualified candidates will show a “deep understanding of racial formations as they relate to design practices.”

”Their work may include anti-racism in analytic frameworks, design methods, fabrication techniques, human-technology interactions, and other creative research and teaching that positively impacts racial justice,” the job listing states.

The listing is a part of the university’s plans to hire 20 professors over the next three years who have “scholarly expertise” in “racial inequality and structural racism.”

The tenured position is also part of a new university faculty cluster hire focused on “Racial Justice & Technology.” The cluster will include three faculty members from the Stamps School of Art and Design, the School of Information, and the Ford School of Public Policy, all funded by the Office of the Provost’s Anti-Racism Initiative. As described by the university, the cluster will serve as an “emerging interdisciplinary field of research that centers structural racism produced and reproduced by information technology, design, and technology policies.”

The University of Michigan also has an active job posting for a “Tenure-track faculty position in anti-racist health services research and pharmacy informatics,” as well as another job listing for an “associate professor/professor” with a focus on ”Anti-racist Health Equity, Health Informatics and/or Data Science.
