[VIDEO] College students outside Supreme Court hearing were overwhelming in support of gay marriage

Of the hundreds who rallied outside the Supreme Court on Tuesday, during the first day of hearings on California’s Proposition 8, most students said they were in support of gay marriage.

“I just think it’s really important that everyone gets the same chance at marriage,” said Mara Schmidt, a student at George Mason University. “I don’t even understand why this is still a fight that’s going on.”

Corcoran College student Maggie Winters said she could hardly imagine even becoming friends with someone who opposed gay marriage.

“I don’t think I could reconcile a friendship with a person who doesn’t believe in equality for all people,” she said.

But Eliza Howard, a student at the traditionally Mormon Southern Virginia University, said that young people who support gay marriage only do so because it is a “trend,” and that the true definition of marriage was clearly between a man and a woman.

“Marriage is ordained of God, and it’s the only way to produce children, and it supports society,” she said.
