Hawley calls out campuses getting 'cozy' with China
- Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) slammed American campuses that take money to house Confucius Institutes.
- The centers have been widely criticized as being propaganda cells for Communist China.
- He accused them of doing so purely for the money.
In a Wednesday night appearance on Tucker Carlson Tonight, Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) called out American universities for housing "Chinese government outposts" to make some extra money.
“Yeah and we also allow those educational institutions to take money directly, almost, from the Chinese government,” Hawley said. “These Confucius Institutes, as they’re sometimes called, Tucker, that are on campuses all across the country, directly subsidized by Beijing."
"You might ask, why do American campuses allow these Chinese government outposts on their own campuses? And the reason is they get paid to, and it’s actually lucrative. So yes, we have got to stop this cozy dealing with Beijing on our campuses.”
Confucius Institutes operate under the guise of Chinese language and culture education, but they have been widely criticized as being agents of Chinese Communist propaganda. In response to these concerns, Congress has barred all universities hosting Confucius Institutes from receiving Department of Defense funding for Chinese language study,
According to CIA reports obtained by the Washington Free Beacon in 2018 "The [Chinese Communist Party] provides ‘strings-attached' funding to academic institutions and think tanks to deter research that casts it in a negative light."
"It has used this tactic to reward pro-China viewpoints and coerce Western academic publications and conferences to self-censor. The CCP often denies visas to academics who criticize the regime, encouraging many China scholars to preemptively self-censor so they can maintain access to the country on which their research depends," the report stated, according to the Free Beacon.
A Politico report from the same year reveals that former Chinese government official and propaganda minister Liu Yushan has admitted that the Chinese government uses Confucius Institutes to “actively carry out international propaganda battles against issues such as Tibet, Xinjiang, Taiwan, human rights and Falun gong."
